A Novel Method to Determine the Optimal Location for a Cellular Tower by Using LiDAR Data

Abstract: The cellular industry faces challenges in controlling the quality of signals for all users, given its meteoric growth in the last few years. The service providers are required to place cellular towers at the optimal location for providing a strong cellular network in a particular region. However, due to buildings, roads, open spaces, etc., of varying topography in 3D (obstructing the signals) and varying densities of settlements, finding the optimal location for the tower becomes challenging. Further, in a big… Show more

“…By utilizing a simplified analysis approach, principal component analysis (PCA) can be used to detect datasets of interest [15][16][17][18] . This approach has the advantage of maintaining the maximum point set 𝑃 𝑡 = {𝑥 1 , 𝑥 2 , 𝑥 3 , ⋯ , 𝑥 𝑛 } while reducing the dimensionality of the data set.…”

“…This matching method is the most common one that has been studied in recent years. According to Kim et al, Changing the building height until the projected shadows created for an estimated height matching of real shadows(Shruti Bharadwaj et al 2022). Based on matching function optimization and building height hypothesis, a mono-scope satellite picture is one approach to estimating the height of structures with flat and gable roofs (Wan et al 2020).…”

“…Furthermore, Bharadwaj et al [4] demonstrate the potential of integrating 3D terrain data through LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) to enhance signal quality across diverse topographies, underscoring the technological advancements in pinpointing optimal cellular tower locations. However, such approaches introduce significant cost implications, particularly for extensive rural areas.…”
