A novel method for single phase-to-ground fault location based on wavelet analysis and correlation

Abstract: This paper deals with the problem of single phaseto-ground fault location in distribution networks. A novel method is proposed that overcomes the difficulties that traditional fault location methods have, like their sensibility to the large transition resistance due to the fault. First, correlation is used in combination with the wavelet transform to analyze the series of transient electric wavefronts generated by the fault. Then, the travelling wave principle is applied to determine the distance between the b… Show more

“…In the power system, line voltage, as a basic data point, plays a very important role in numerous engineering projects and theoretical research [1][2][3][4]. Voltage measurement, as an important component of the power system, plays a decisive role in applications such as relay protection [5], energy metering, intelligent equipment control [6,7], and the online monitoring of overvoltage [8][9][10][11]. The accuracy, reliability, convenience, and speed of voltage measurement are key technical requirements in energy metering and relay protection, power system monitoring and diagnosis, and power system fault analysis, and they are the foundation for ensuring the safe operation of the power system.…”

“…These methods can generally be classified as (i) methods based on fundamental harmonic of current and voltage signals [1][2]7], (ii) methods using transmission line differential equations and line parameters estimation [3], (iii) those based on travelling waves measurements [4][5][6][7]18]. The accuracy of first and second group is not so good, because the calculation algorithm depends on line parameters and load conditions, while lines parameters are affected by many factors such as weather condition, fault type, fault impedance and so on [8].…”
