A Novel Method for Determination of Kinetic Friction Coefficient using Inclined Plane

Abstract: Presented in this paper is the theoretical background for a novel method for determination of kinetic friction coefficient. The method is based on the equation of movement of a rigid body along an inclined plane and has not been previously discussed in literature. According to the theoretical results presented in this paper, mean kinetic friction coefficient can be determined based on the time it takes a rigid body to travel a distance along an inclined plane. Experimental results show that the mean kinetic fr… Show more

“…Several different tribometers, such as those for studying the static coefficient of rolling friction at high contact temperatures and various contact pressure [9] or for determining the static coefficient of friction at high temperatures [10], were designed based on a principle of an inclined plane. Vukelic et al [11] recently presented a device and proposed a method based on the equation of motion of a rigid body along an inclined plane that allows the quantification of friction parameters of real industrial products (sliding guides, etc. ).…”

“…The authors intended to determine the kinetic coefficient of friction experimentally, based on the differential equation of body motion down an inclined plane in the presence of frictional and air resistance forces. It should be emphasised that Leonhard Euler laid the theoretical foundations of this method in 1748 [33,34] and that the authors based some of their previous kinetic friction investigations on Euler's approach [7,12]. In previous investigations [12], where the theoretical model considered the inclination angle α to be less than 90°, the authors introduced the coefficient ξ as the ratio between the air resistance force and friction force:…”
