A Novel Method for Changing the Dynamics of Slender Elements Using Sponge Particles Structures

Abstract: The paper concerns problems related to controlling the dynamic properties of beam-like elements. The parameters of the investigated system can be changed by external factors, resulting in partial changes in the system mass redistribution. It is assumed that it is possible to control the system dynamics by shaping the object frequency structure. The paper introduces the mathematical model of the investigated cantilever beam filled with a Sponge Particle Structure. The continuous model has been simplified to a d… Show more

“…Scientists and researchers aim to propose novel designs of devices that could be an alternative to the commonly used controlling absorbers. Several papers [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ] present an approach in which mechanical vibrations were damped by means of an innovative adaptive impact damper. The main factor reducing vibrations is the possibility of mass movement inside a container of variable volume.…”

“…It is possible to find magnetorheological devices [13], viscous dampers, tension belts [14] as well as cutting or slitting energy absorbers [15] there. Continuous research on different solutions and the complexity of the problem give rise to looking for better approaches based on smart structures such as sponge particles structures or vacuum packed particles [16,17].…”

“…Concepts of tuneable elements utilising VPPs are described in some works and show efficient control strategies [11]. Regarding shaping and control of the dynamics with smart materials, the authors of [17] studied on a new type of smart structure, which is a so-called sponge particle structure (SPS). The authors proposed a method for controlling the dynamics of a slender beam filled with SPS by shaping its frequency structure by redistribution of the investigated system mass.…”
