A Novel Metal Supported SOFC Fabrication Method Developed in KAIST: a Sinter-Joining Method

Abstract: Metal-supported SOFCs have been investigated to overcome the disadvantages of ceramic-supported SOFCs, including issues related to mechanical strength and sealing. In the case of ceramic-supported cells, the mechanical support is a brittle ceramic or cermet, and it contains expensive materials. However, metal-supported cells utilize ceramic layers that are only as thick as necessary for electrochemical functioning, thereby compensating for the disadvantages of ceramic-supported cells. The mechanical support is… Show more

“…8 (a) and (b) are in-situ pressure curve for thermal aging (at 750 °C for 100 h) and average leak rate curve for thermal cycling (RT-750 °C for 20 cycles) of Crofer22H/Crofer22H brazed coupons, respectively. According to the formula [1], the average leak rate of Crofer22H/Crofer22H joint after aging can be calculated from slope of pressure with time (Figure 8 (a)), which is around 2.8 × 10 -5 mbar.l/s/cm. For thermal cycling, the leak rate is below detection limit at beginning, and increases gradually with more cycles, which is close to 2.0 × 10 -4 mbar.l/s/cm after 20 cycles (Figure 8 (b)).…”

“…He gas was purged into brazed coupons beforehand as a medium for leakage detection. With the change of pressure inside the brazed coupons under testing conditions, average leak rate can be calculated according to the definition as depicted in formula [1]. The filling volume of gas and sealing length in this study were set as 10 liters and 6.4 cm, respectively.…”
