A novel maize-infecting mastrevirus from La Réunion Island

Abstract: Despite extensive sampling, only one virus belonging to the genus Mastrevirus of the family Geminiviridae, maize streak virus (MSV), has until now been detected in maize with maize streak disease (MSD) symptoms. Here, we report for the first time a second, highly divergent, mastrevirus isolated from two maize plants displaying characteristic MSD-like symptoms, sampled on the South-west Indian Ocean Island, La Réunion. The two isolates shared \57 % genome-wide identity with all other known mastreviruses. We pro… Show more

“…This result breaks long-accepted conventions regarding begomoviruses and monocotyledonous plants. Nucleotide sequences from dicotyledon-infecting mastreviruses showed phylogenetic differences from previously reported mastreviruses ( Pande et al, 2012 ). Dicotyledon-infecting mastreviruses are believed to be the result of host adaptation of monocotyledon-infecting mastreviruses ( Liu et al, 1998 ).…”

“…Currently, there are 29 recognized members belonging to the genus Mastrevirus based on ICTV classification [ 2 ]. Maize streak Reunion virus (MSRV) is an emerging new member of genus Mastrevirus that has been reported only in La Reunion Island and Nigeria and shares less than 57 % genome-wide identity with all other known mastreviruses [ 4 , 5 ]. Apart from Maize streak virus (MSV), MSRV is the only mastrevirus species detected in maize.…”
