A novel magneto-rheological fluid dual-clutch design for two-speed transmission of electric vehicles

Abstract: The dual-clutch transmission (DCT) in electric vehicles can significantly decrease the torque interruption and improve the shifting comfort. The magneto-rheological fluid (MRF) is a kind of intelligent material commonly used for torque transmission devices with high control accuracy and fast response, e.g. MRF clutch. This paper proposes a novel MRF dual-clutch (MRFDC) design for the two-speed transmission of EVs combining the DCT and MRF clutch advantages. The MRFDC is composed of an internal clutch and an ex… Show more

“…MRF valves can achieve extremely fast on/off switching through applying/removing external electromagnetic field, but they are always accompanied by a pressure drop about 4 MPa and their nominal flow rate is rather small (<8 l min −1 ) [13,[16][17][18], which are more suitable for use as damping elements in mechanical systems. The shear mode of MRF, which can achieve high torque transmission has been applied to vehicle clutches [19,20]. This mode also provides new insights for enhancing the performance of high-speed on/off valve actuators.…”

“…In 1948, Rabinow [1] invented a smart material called magnetorheological fluids (MRFs hereinafter), which consists of advantages, MRF has broad applications in fields such as vehicles [2][3][4], polishing [5][6][7][8], vibration isolation [9][10][11], mechanical transmission [12], military, and aerospace [13].…”

“…Under the action of no external magnetic field, the MRF behaves as a Newtonian fluid. In contrast, the MRF changes from free flow without a magnetic field to solid-like flow, showing the characteristics of Bingham fluid with high viscosity, under the action of the external magnetic field [19,20]. Therefore, MRFT technology has the advantages of both easy and stepless speed ratio regulation, simple control, fast response, and small volume [21].…”
