A Novel Mach-Zehnder Interferometer Using Eccentric-Core Fiber Design for Optical Coherence Tomography

Abstract: A novel Mach-Zehnder interferometer using eccentric-core fiber (ECF) design for optical coherence tomography (OCT) is proposed and demonstrated. Instead of the commercial single-mode fiber (SMF), the ECF is used as one interference arm of the implementation. Because of the offset location of the eccentric core, it is sensitive to directional bending and the optical path difference (OPD) of two interference arms can be adjusted with high precision. The birefringence of ECF is calculated and experimentally measu… Show more

“…This application supports the expansion of PS-OCT functionality to the analysis and diagnosis of different tissues and pathologies [41], also in cardiovascular diseases [42]. Further developments, based on novel setups like eccentric-core fiber OCT [43] and assisted by real time processing methods based on computer Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) [44], will impulse translation to the surgery room and inclusion within common surgical practices.…”

“…OCT is one of the most innovative and rapidly emerging optical imaging techniques in the last decades. Potential fields for OCT applications are steadily increasing through both numerous functional and contrast-enhanced [14] extensions of OCT and combining OCT into multi-modal optical systems [15]. For example, the combination of OCT, Raman spectroscopy and optoacoustic provides both morphological and molecular information from a target biological tissue [16].…”
