A Novel Load-Balancing Scheme for Cellular-WLAN Heterogeneous Systems With a Cell-Breathing Technique

Abstract: Abstract-This paper proposes a novel load balancing scheme, for an operator-deployed cellular-WLAN heterogeneous network (HetNet), where the user association is controlled by employing cell breathing technique for the WLAN network. This scheme, eliminates the complex coordination and additional signalling overheads between the users and the network, by allowing the users to simply associate with the available WLAN networks similar to the traditional WLAN-first association, without making complex association de… Show more

“…The main reasons are: it automatically adjusts the size of the cell, increasing the probability of coverage holes, and it implements power allocation where the LTE downlink cannot change the reference signal strength without adjusting the data power [41]. In [42], a load balancing model based on a hybrid LTE/WLAN cell breathing technique was proposed. The model allows the technique to simply associate with existing WLAN networks, similar to traditional WLAN priority network association, reducing complex coordination and additional signal overheads.…”

“…Some work was introduced in the literature based on traffic transfer from heavily loaded to lightly loaded BSs in an effort to balance the load. Also using the cell breathing technique for WLAN networks, the authors in [24] optimized system throughput with constraints on UEs fairness and load balance by associating the UE to the strongest WiFi access point.…”

“…The authors of [24] proposed a load-balancing scheme for an operator-deployed cellular-WLAN HetNet to optimize system throughput. The authors in [8] proposed a distributed belief propagation (BP) algorithm to optimize the weighted proportional fairness with various UE priorities.…”

“…For example, the authors of [11] studied energy efficiency and load balancing for the user association problem, and proposed an energy conservation algorithm for energy-efficient transmissions. In [12], a load-balancing scheme was presented for addressing the association between subscribers and available wireless local area networks (WLANs).…”
