Ambient intelligence research is about ubiquitous computing and about social and intelligent properties of computersupported environments. These properties aim at providing inhabitants or visitors of ambient intelligence environments with support in their activities. Activities include interactions between inhabitants and between inhabitants and (semi-) autonomous agents, including mobile robots, virtual humans and other smart objects in the environment. Providing real-time support requires understanding of behavior and activities. Clearly, being able to provide real-time support also allows us to provide off-line support, that is, intelligent off-line retrieval, summarizing, browsing and even replay, possibly in a transformed way, of stored information. Real-time remote access to these computer-supported environments also allows participation in activities and such participation as well can profit from the real-time capturing and interpretation of behavior and activities performed and supported by ambient intelligence technology. In this paper, we illustrate and support these observations by looking at results obtained in several European and US projects, in particular projects on smart environments, whether they are smart meetings or lecture rooms, smart offices or intelligently monitored events in public spaces. In particular, we look at the augmented multi-party interaction (AMI) project in which we are involved and we try to sketch a framework in which we can transform research results from the meeting context to the home environment context.

This paper discusses an architecture that aims to unify and simplify the supervision and control of networked devices in commercial building environments. To be adoptable for real-life applications, the technical key features of such an architecture are mainly derived from four high-level requirements:The system must add true user value, still be easy to use, work for a broad range of quite different devices and minimize the engineering costs. This results in a distributed, ad hoc capable and scalable hard-and software infrastructure with the ability to adapt to the context of use and goal-centric services provided by the numerous underlying devices of the heterogeneous building network. Preferably, standard mobile clients such as smartphones and PDAs act as control points providing a graphical end user interface generated on the fly. This text explores the different building blocks that make up such a system, elaborates topics that are currently under research and proposes a solution.

Fieldbus networks have significantly improved flexibility and management in classic building automation domains. However, the costs of such installations are still greatly affected by the commissioning efforts needed to bring them up and running. The dedicated cabling, initial engineering efforts and sophisticated binding and configuration tools often prevent home owners from investing in such networks. On the other side, many electronic devices from other domains have found their way into home-and building environments. And with IT equipment TCP/IP connectivity and "zero config" protocols were introduced. There is the vision of an intelligent home/building with one integrated network in which all devices work together seamlessly. It may positively influence factors such as energy efficiency, usability, flexibility, security and comfort. This paper proposes an Internet protocol based architecture thought to build up such a network. The result is a distributed, scalable hard-and software infrastructure that adapts to the context of use and comes up with goal-centric services provided by the numerous underlying devices. It allows standard mobile clients to act as remote controls with dynamic user interfaces generated on the fly. This text explores the different building blocks that make up the architecture and presents results derived from a first prototype.
