A novel information entropy based randomness test for image encryption

Abstract: The quality of image encryption is commonly measured by the Shannon entropy over the ciphertext image. However, this measurement does not consider to the randomness of local image blocks and is inappropriate for scrambling based image encryption methods. In this paper, a new information entropy-based randomness measurement for image encryption is introduced which, for the first time, answers the question of whether a given ciphertext image is sufficiently random-like. It measures the randomness over the cipher… Show more

“…If an encryption scheme contains no confusion or diffusion stage, it would easily be destroyed by differential attacks. In order to confirm whether the proposed encryption algorithm is sensitive to plain image and keys, this paper brings out two tests: Number of pixels change rate (NPCR) and Unified average changing intensity (UACI) [40]. The equation to calculate NPCR is Eq.…”

“…Recently, the block entropy test was derived. In the following block entropy test [29], 100 non-overlapped blocks of the size 16×16 are randomly selected from each cipher image. The information entropy of each block is recorded via (10) and the average entropy is calculated.…”

“…Where X represents the image to testx i denotes the i t h possible value in X, and Pr(x i ) is the probability of X =x i . Theoretical value for H(X)=8 then it indicates that randomness of image is more and that will secure the input image [10].…”
