A novel hybrid approach using sms and ROCOF for islanding detection of inverter-based DGs

Abstract: Abstract-This paper proposes a novel hybrid approach for islanding detection of inverter-based distributed generations (DG) based on combination of the Slip mode frequency-shift (SMS) as an active and rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) relay and over/under frequency relay as passive methods. This approach is utilized to force the DG to lose its stable operation and drift the frequency out of the allowed range of the frequency threshold. Performance of the proposed approach is evaluated under the IEEE 1547, UL… Show more

“…Therefore, another type of IDT called the hybrid IDT has also been suggested, which amalgamate two or more IDTs from both the methods, ie, active and passive IDTs. In a previous study, a hybrid IDT based on the combination of the slip mode frequency shift (an active IDT) and ROCOF and over/under frequency relay (a passive IDT) has been proposed. Another hybrid IDT based on the probability of islanding (PoI) which uses a combination of active active passive along with communication‐based technique (a remote IDT) is suggested in another study …”

“…Here, secondary IDM executes when the primary IDM fails to detect the islanding condition successfully. Several HIDMs have been proposed by the researchers in the recent past . IDM presented in Menon and Nehrir uses the positive feedback as active method and voltage unbalance as passive methods.…”

[20][21][22][23][24][25][26] IDM presented in Menon and Nehrir 20 uses the positive feedback as active method and voltage unbalance as passive methods. Yin et al 21 proposed an HIDM using rate of change of voltage and adaptive reactive power shift.…”

“…The sudden disconnection of DGs could affect to the stability and reliability of the MG system [4,5]. Low voltage ride through (LVRT) operation strategy of the MG system should be considered to improve the system stability and reliability [6][7][8][9].…”
