A novel handover decision-making algorithm for HetNets

Abstract: This paper aims to improve the handover performance in heterogeneous networks (HetNets). Since achieving high data rates, low signaling loads, and a better coverage area are highly dependent on the number of handovers, reducing the number of unnecessary handovers is crucial for both mobile users and the whole network. In this paper, a new decision-making algorithm, based on traffic and propagation metrics, is proposed for HetNets that can reduce the number of unnecessary handovers in comparison with the tradit… Show more

“…Numerical results demonstrate that RSS−α enhances the system performance in terms of the probability of assigning mobile stations to femtocells with the same number of HOs [38]. Habibzadeh et al proposed a decision-making handover algorithm for HetNets in [39]. The decision is made based on the received signal strength and the traffic metric.…”

“…Also, σ 2 z1 and σ 2 z2 can be calculated as explained in Habibzadeh et al 22 When a CHU does not handover and the signal strength of it from an MBS goes below the threshold γ m and when a CHU performs handover to an FBS but its signal strength from an FBS goes below the threshold γ f , the outage occurs.
