A Novel Geometrical Method for Discrimination of Normal, Interictal and Ictal EEG Signals

Abstract: The electroencephalogram (EEG) signal is known as a nonlinear and complex signal. The EEG signal has very important information about brain activities and disorders which can detect by an accurate Computer-aided diagnosis system. The performance of the Computer-aided diagnosis system directly depends on using features in the classifiers. In this paper, we proposed nonlinear geometrical features for the classification of EEG signals. The normal, interictal and ictal EEG signals of the Bonn university EEG databa… Show more

“…Geometrical features have been extracted from 2D illustration of several bio-signals including hart rate variability (HRV) [35], ECG [36] and EEG [37,38] for detection of disorders. Geometrical features can quantify the variability and complexity of the 2D shape of bio-signals.…”

“…To quantify this element for SODP, we calculate the shortest distance from each point to the 45-degree line as a feature. If ( , ) is a point on SODP, we can calculate the summation of the shortest distance from each point relative to the 45degree line as [37]:…”

“…Background. Epilepsy is a disease of the central nervous system in which the brain is abnormally active [1][2][3]. Epilepsy, in other words, is a neurological disorder that causes seizures, abnormal sensations, and sometimes loss of consciousness [4].…”

“…The postsynaptic potentials that constitute the source of the EEG are collected in the cortex, spread through the structures surrounding the brain to the scalp with hair and recorded from the scalp via metal electrodes. The location of each electrode covered with a conductive material is determined by standard measurements performed on nasion, inion, right and left preauricular points and they are placed according to the international 10-20 system ( Figure 1) [7][8][9].…”
