A novel fluorene based “turn on” fluorescent sensor for the determination of zinc and cadmium: experimental and theoretical studies along with live cell imaging

Abstract: A new “naked-eye” colorimetric and fluorometric chemosensor HAFPA synthesized form both 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 complexes with Zn2+ and only 1 : 1 complex with Cd2+ which can detect intracellular Zn2+ and Cd2+ in A549 cells.

“…The binding ratio between the metal and the probe can be enough to discriminate between two metal ions. For example, LMWP 26 was synthesized by Rajak et al Scheme 10 [180]. Fluorene-pyridine were coupled together via an imine bond.…”

“…[7][8][9] However, the abnormal accumulation of Zn 2+ within the body could create serious health issues, such as myopathy, Alzheimer's disease, epileptic seizures, encephalopathy, and various cancers. 10,11 Consequently, it is highly desirable for developing effective ways for monitoring Zn 2+ , 12 which would provide an effective and promising approach to study its physiological and pathological processes. 13 The usual detection procedures include traditional techniques, such as, chromatography, voltammetric and ion selective electrodes.…”

“…In recent years, fluorescent sensors have attracted much attention in the detection of Cd 2+ due to their excellent properties of easy operation, high sensitivity, selectivity, and real-time monitoring [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ]. In the past few decades, a great variety of fluorescence probes have been reported for the determination of Cd 2+ , including organic dyes [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ] and quantum dots (QDs) [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ].…”
