A novel feeding topology for DC electric arc furnaces utilizing PWM-AC choppers

Abstract: SUMMARY The main contribution of this paper is the study of a new feeding system for direct current (DC) electric arc furnaces. This system includes pulse‐width modulation‐alternating current (PWM‐AC) choppers along with six‐pulse diode rectifier. In contrast with traditional power supplies such as 12‐pulse thyristor‐based rectifier and 12‐pulse diode rectifier–DC chopper‐based power supplies, the proposed configuration stands out because of the reduced number of rectifier units and output reactors. Furthermor… Show more

“…The recommended supplying topology is simulated in PSCAD/EMTDC software. The significant technical specifications of the steel making plant are described in Appendix A. Additionally, it should be noted that the chaotic model of the DC arc furnace as presented in Kolagar and Shoulaie and Kolagaret al has been employed in this paper. Moreover, the switching frequency of matrix converter has been taken into account equal to 600 Hz, and also the frequency of input and output side of the matrix converter has been selected equal to 50 Hz.…”

“…Similar to what was presented in Kolagar and Shoulaie, to obtain an optimal operating point, a cost function found on favorable power quality criteria is taken into account, and then the IPF characteristics and input current displacement angle are determined through optimizing it. As mentioned in Kolagar and Shoulaie, the selection of the IPF characteristics is relied on choosing an optimum cutoff frequency.…”

“…There are lots of studies on different aspects of AC EAFs [1][2][3] and some others exclusively on DC EAFs. [4,5] On the other hand, increasing competition in the global transformer market has encouraged the manufacturers to increase reliability while reducing cost. [6] Therefore, using various methods to solve transformer design optimization, presenting a detailed treatment of transformer selection and considering the environmental cost of the transformer are mandatory [6].…”
