A novel energy-aware cluster head selection based on particle swarm optimization for wireless sensor networks

Abstract: The wireless sensor networks have long been an attractive field to the researchers and scientists for its ease in deployment and maintenance. In this research, we focus on the maximization of network lifetime which has become a critical issue in sensor networks. Clustered organization of nodes with aggregation of data at the cluster head becomes one of the significant means to extend life expectancy of the network. This paper proposes Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) approach for generating energy-aware clust… Show more

“…The method of sensor node clustering and cluster head selection [23] are also interesting topics but are out of the scope of this paper. Also we consider only the single-hop transmission and omit the multihop routing issue for ad hoc networks [24].…”

“…In Particle swarm optimization (PSO), clusters are formed in a way that the consumed energy of the network is distributed within a balanced framework and therefore the energy consumption is reduced and its life is prolonged [12]. Fuzzy energy-aware unequal clustering algorithm (EAUCF) attempts to choose nodes as cluster heads that can optimize energy consumption, by using fuzzy relations, the residual energy of the nodes, and distance between nodes [13]. This algorithm uses unequal clustering and -unlike LEACH-forms clusters on the basis of fuzzy relations.…”

“…Recently, as rapid improvements and miniaturization in hardware, a single embedded device can be equipped with audio and visual information collection modules [3]. The availability of low-cost hardware is like enabling the development of wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs), that is, networks of resource-constrained wireless devices that can retrieve multimedia content such as video and audio streams, still images, and scalar sensor data from the environment [4][5][6][7].…”
