A novel energy absorber based on magnetorheological gel

Abstract: In this work, a novel magnetorheological energy absorber (MREA) was designed by using magnetorheological gel (MRG) as the damping medium. The proposed MREA had tunable piston gap distances and variable inner magnetic flux density distribution. The piston gap distance could be varied from 7-2 mm and the magnetic flux density at the gap increased from 120-860 mT, respectively. Under both low velocity compression and high speed impact, the damping could be divided into three parts. In the impact test, the velocit… Show more

“…These features equip MR gel with great potentials in engineering applications, such as developing damper and vibration absorber. Till now, there are only a few works been done till now on the development of the MR gel devices [9][10][11] and the majority of the research on the MR gel focused on the preparation and characterization of the material. Zhang et al [12][13] have investigated the dynamic behaviors of MR gel with the various weight fractions of carbonyl-iron-particle using large-amplitude oscillation shear.…”

“…MR elastomer mainly works by changing its modulus through magnetic field during pre-yield stage, which shows different working mechanism with MR fluid (MR fluid mainly works at post-yield stage). The examples for the application of MR gel are relatively less in comparison with MR fluid or MR elastomer, but the unique magneto-induced phenomena have attracted more and more attentions; some work concentrating on the potential applications of MR gel have been reported [17][18][19][20].…”

“…8,9 Recently, this type of stimuli-responsive smart material has been attracting increasing interest and has been widely used in dampers, vibration controllers, body armors and isolators. [10][11][12][13][14][15][16] RMG is obtained by uniformly dispersing CIP into a shear thickening matrix; therefore, the shear thickening effect and magnetorheological effect are two major properties of the gel.…”
