This paper aims to review the performance analysis of interlocking concrete block pavement with by-products such as coconut fibers, and construction and demolition recycled materials, and to compare their skills with asphalt pavement, especially for light-traffic urban road applications. The focus is on mechanical behavior (mix parameters and the influence of by-products), pavement design, sustainability (the heat island effect), the management of contaminant concentrations within infiltration related to permeability, and Life Cycle Assessment. Considering the overall performance analysis, interlocking concrete block pavement was the most attractive alternative because it was approximately 33–44% cheaper in the maintenance process, cooler over a range of 2.2–15 °C, and more permeable by 0.4 cm/s to 0.6 cm/s than asphalt pavement, saving costs and improving drainage and human thermal comfort. However, asphalt pavement was around 35% cheaper during the construction phase (mainly due to energy consumption), and it presented a 32% lower nitrogen oxide concentration. This paper showed the advantages and disadvantages of both types of pavements. A further breakdown should be developed and integrated into the decision-making process about choosing between solutions.

Hot-gas drum heating (HDH) of bituminous mixtures is a new approach to heating bituminous mixtures that is influenced by the parameters of the hot gas and drum. A fluid thermal numerical model was developed to evaluate the effects of heating bituminous mixtures with HDH using a finite-volume method (FVM). The FVM was verified through the heating test of a bituminous mixture. The effects of the drum rotating speed and hot-gas speed on the efficiency of heating the bituminous mixture during HDH were analyzed using Fluent. The results indicated that the drum rotating speed directly influenced the formation of a bituminous-mixture curtain, which had a significant effect on the efficiency of heating the bituminous mixture. The efficiency of the heat exchange between the hot gas and the bituminous mixture was high, with full contact between the hot gas and the bituminous mixture. With an increase in the hot-gas speed, the heating time became shorter; however, the rate of hot-gas utilization was reduced. A symmetrical temperature distribution and a superior heating efficiency of the bituminous mixture were achieved when the drum rotating speed was 7 rpm and the hot-gas speed was 1.4 m/s.

Asphalt pavement recycling technology with high reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) content has always been limited by unsatisfactory pavement performance and the rising cost of pavement materials. To address these challenges, polyurethane-prepolymer-modified bitumen (PPB) was proposed to be utilized as the asphalt binder of fully reclaimed asphalt pavement (FRAP) in this study. The proper formula of the PPB binder was determined based on a range of tests. The rheological behavior and tensile properties of the PPB binder were then investigated, and the economic cost of materials was discussed as well. Results revealed that the PPB system can be obtained through chemical synthesis using readily available raw materials. The reaction of polyurethane prepolymer and chain extender provides PPB with significant improvement in temperature susceptibility, rutting resistance, and tensile properties. It is also demonstrated in this study that the PPB mixture containing 100% RAP, on the whole, takes advantage of cost-saving especially compared to the epoxy asphalt mixture. Therefore, the PPB binder exhibits a favorable application prospect in FRAP.
