A novel digital FM receiver for mobile and personal communications

Abstract: Recently, a digital baseband receiver called zerointermediate frequency zero-crossing demodulator (ZIFZCD) was developed for digital FM signal detection. ZIFZCD is applicable to many worldwide mobile and personal communications systems. In addition, ZIFZCD offers lower power consumption and simpler implementation, compared to the conventional analog implementation [e.g., a limiter-discriminator integrator and dump (LDI)] and the conventional digital implementation [e.g., the cross-differentiate-multiply demodu… Show more

“…In the ZigBee receiver, the sensitivity shall be below or equal to -85 dBm to reach an SER of 2~4×10 -4 [1] . Seen from Fig.6, this implies that E b /N 0 must equal to 9.5 dB in AZCD [15] , 13 dB in ZIFZCD [12][13][14] , 12 dB in PQD [16] . So, in view of reaching required SER, the proposed demodulator will be at least 0.7 dB better than AZCD.…”

“…Usually, two kinds of digital demodulating technique for MSK signal are respectively introduced in 1 Refs. [12][13][14]. One is coherent demodulator, which is better for lower Bit Error Rate (BER).…”

“…The phase rotation detector generates further analog baseband signals which are phase rotated versions of the input I and Q signals. This is mandatory for narrow-band FM systems, e.g., binary CPM with modultion index values of 0.5 and below because such systems may not exhibit any zero-crossing during a bit period when only taking the original I and Q signals into account [30,31]. This disadvantage can be overcome when in total 2 a , a ∈ {2, 3, .…”
