A Novel Construction of Substitution Box Involving Coset Diagram and a Bijective Map

Abstract: The substitution box is a basic tool to convert the plaintext into an enciphered format. In this paper, we use coset diagram for the action of (2, Z) on projective line over the finite field (2 9 ) to construct proposed S-box. The vertices of the cost diagram are elements of (2 9 ) which can be represented by powers of , where is the root of irreducible polynomial ( ) = 9 + 4 + 1 over Z 2 . Let * (2 9 ) denote the elements of (2 9 ) which are of the form of even powers of . In the first step, we construct a 16… Show more

“…Many other researchers have designed S-Boxes using several techniques and concepts like graph isomorphism [45], coset diagrams [46], linear fractional transformation [47][48][49][50], etc. Ciphers based on S-box are highly dependent on the security features of the used S-box.…”

“…(c) The bits independent criterion for nonlinearity and SAC comes out as 104.07 and 0.5020 for proposed S-box. Our BIC-NL results are fairly higher than S-boxes investigated in [10,12,15,16,19,26,[28][29][30][31]34] and BIC-SAC satisfies the avalanche criterion with negligible margin like other Sboxes. Hence, satisfaction of bits independence criterion is consistent and better than most of the 8×8 S-boxes.…”

“…We used JPEG image of a baboon for this analysis. .9832 is better than that of [4,24,26,46,47]. e entropy value is very close to the ideal value, which is 8. e values of contrast, correlation, energy, and homogeneity also indicate the proposed scheme provides a strong S-box which is suitable for encryption applications.…”
