A Novel Bis Tridentate Bipyridine Carboxamide Ligand and Its Complexation to Copper(II):  Synthesis, Structure, and Magnetism

Abstract: A new bis tridentate ligand 2,2'-bipyridine-3,3'-[2-pyridinecarboxamide] H(2)L(1) which can bind transition metal ions has been synthesized via the condensation of 3,3'-diamino-2,2'-bipyridine together with 2-pyridine carbonyl chloride. Two copper(II) coordination compounds have been prepared and characterized: [Cu(2)(L(1))(hfac)(2)].3CH(3)CN.H(2)O (1) and [Cu(2)(L(1))Cl(2)].CH(3)CN (2). The single-crystal X-ray structures reveal that complex 1 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1, with the unit cell p… Show more

“…9 There is also the possibility of the bipyridine group adopting a trans conformation which opens other opportunities for metal ion coordination. 10 However here we report a most remarkable transformation. Reaction of L 1 with an excess of cobalt(II) perchlorate in wet acetonitrile at room temperature led to the isolation of single crystals of the metal complex [Co(L 2 )(OH 2 )CH 3 CN]⋅2ClO 4 4 containing the rearranged tetradentate ligand L 2 .…”

“…Interestingly, apart from one example, in many Cu 2 Cl 2 dimers, the bond angles deviate from 90.0°. 35 The nonbonding Cu···Cu distance in 3 is 3.514 Å. The overall molecular structure of 3 has a crystallographic center of inversion which is located between the two central copper(II) ions.…”

“…These include chloride, two oxygens of one bidentate carboxylate, two oxygens from two carboxylates which are already bound to Cu (II), two phenolate oxygens and two water molecules. 6,12 Overall, the assembly is a two-dimensional coordination polymer where the Cs-Cl bond remained intact within the network. Comparatively, chloride forms only a single bridge between Cs(I) and Cu(II) at an angle of 91.35°.…”
