“…In contrast, the less hindered phosphines PMe 3 [4,5] and PMe 2 Ph [6] stabilize polynuclear adducts in which the same anion acts as a bridging ligand through the N1, N6 atoms. Both of the binding modes of the adenine are observed with L = PMePh 2 [7]: the trinuclear cyclic cation cis-½ðPMePh 2 Þ 2 Ptf9-MeAdðÀHÞ; N 1 N 6 g 3 3þ is stable in the solid state, whereas in DMSO solution the main species appears to be the chelated species cis-[(PMePh 2 ) 2 Pt{9-MeAd(-H),N 6 N 7 }] + , analogous to complex 2.…”

“…In this contest, we have shown that the reaction of the hydroxo complexes cis-[L 2 Pt(l-OH)] 2 -(NO 3 ) 2 (L = tertiary phosphine) with 9-substituted adenines affords the polynuclear cyclic species cis-[L 2 Pt{adenine(-H),N 1 N 6 }] n (NO 3 ) n in which the NH 2 -deprotonated nucleobases bridge selectively the metal centres through the N(1) and N(6) atoms. The nuclearity of the adeninate complexes appears to be dependent on the nature of the neutral ligands L. PMe 3 stabilizes the dinuclear species (n = 2 [4,5]), while the trinuclear analogues (n = 3) are formed when L are PMe 2 Ph [6] and PMePh 2 [7]. With the latter phosphine the cation cis-½ðPMePh 2 Þ 2 Ptf9-MeAdðÀHÞ; N 1 N 6 g 3 3þ is stable only in chlorinated solvents.…”

“…For this last adduct the N1,N6-coordination of the nucleobase was confirmed by X-ray analysis [27]. The dinuclear species for 3 is characterized by the presence of two AB multiplets in the 31 P NMR spectrum, as well as of distinct resonances for the nucleobase H2, H8 and N(6)H protons (see Table 1), in line with the existence of two conformers resulting in the relative orientation, syn and anti, of the ribose groups with respect to the coordination plane of the metal.…”
