A novel arc-tooth-trace cycloid cylindrical gear

In practical use, most gears have an involute shape of tooth flanks. However, external involute gears have some drawbacks, such as unfavourable kinematic conditions at the beginning and end of meshing, a limited minimum number of teeth, and the highly loaded convex-convex (i.e., non-conformal) contact. Researchers have developed and analysed various non-involute forms of tooth flanks, but they have not been widely accepted. The main reasons are higher manufacturing costs and sensitivity to manufacturing and assembly errors. Analyses of non-involute forms of teeth are mostly theoretical (analytical and numerical), while there is a lack of experimental confirmations of theoretical assumptions. This paper reviews external non-involute shapes, their operating characteristics and possibilities of use compared to involute gears. Established criteria, such as Hertzian pressure, oil film thickness, bending stress at the root of the tooth, contact temperature, and gear noise, were used for assessment. The results of analytical studies and experimental research on S-gears are presented in more detail. S-gears have a higher surface durability and a lower heat load when compared to involute gears. The usability of non-involute gears is increasing with the development of new technologies and materials. However, the advantages of non-involute shapes are not so significant that they could easily displace involute gears, which are cheaper to manufacture.

To reconstruct the tooth surface of a circular arc tooth trace cylindrical gear (CATT gear), one needs to create an accurate 3D model and investigate geometric features of the tooth profile. According to the processing principle of the rotating knife dish milling, and using the space meshing theory and differential geometry, the tooth surface equation and the tooth profile of CATT gears have been deduced. Then, the tooth surface reconstruction of CATT gears was done and a 3D model was created. Next, based on theoretical deduction, it was proven that the profile of the middle section was involute, and the other section was hyperbolic. Finally, the influences of the design parameters on the tooth profile were investigated. The general tendency is that the gear tooth thickness becomes thinner as the gear width increases and the tooth line radius decreases, and the tooth profiles of the concave and the convex tooth surface may intersect. The influences of the module need to be discussed separately. The tooth thickness deviation increases as the module increases. But the relative tooth thickness deviation is opposite. Therefore, it is suggested that R T  (3-4)b and the module should be large to improve the bearing capacity. The results of the investigation provide a reference for the design, profile modification, lubrication, and measuring of CATT gears.

Accurate gear profile plays an important role in determining the transmission performance of gear-drive equipment. In this paper, a novel method for extracting gear tooth profile edge is presented. The presented method is based on engagement-pixel image edge tracking (EPIET) technique, and does not rely on the traditional meshing theory. An algorithm for the proposed method is put forward. Firstly, instantaneous contact images between the envelope curves of the gear profile and the instantaneous locus of the cutting tool are acquired. Secondly, pixels on the boundary of the envelope curves are lighted and the instantaneous locus coordinates of the cutting tool are calibrated. Lastly, the pixel coordinates of instantaneous meshing points are extracted, based on the fact that there is exactly one contact point per instant, and major error sources of the presented method are discussed. To verify the effectiveness of the presented method, a case study is conducted on a face gear, which is a type of complex conjugate gear, to extract its tooth profile edge. In the study, the tooth profile error and the contact line error are investigated. The results demonstrate that the presented method, without knowing complicated meshing equations, can acquire feasible accuracy and stability, compared with traditional meshing equations. It is shown that the novel method can be extended to applications of digital design of complex conjugate curved surfaces, in a simple and fast manner.
