A Novel Approach to Utilize PLC to Detect Corroded and Eroded Segments of Power Transmission Lines

Abstract: A great number of existing power transmission lines have aged throughout the world. A considerable proportion of them are located in the environments that exacerbate their corrosion and erosion process. In-time detection of defects necessitates the use of nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques. Scanning the lines with robots and helicopters are the methods in use. In this paper, we propose a new NDT technique that uses the elements of power-line carriers, generally for information communication purposes, to d… Show more

“…Condition monitoring activities/detection methods are specified in the worksheet (table V). In addition to the traditional detection methods, novel non-destructive testing and Evaluation (NDT&E) techniques [17] are recently introduced such as wave propagation based SHM can be employed to detect possible damages in panel body plate [18][19].…”

“…The assessment of the environment in which outdoor equipment with metal shells operate has attracted great interest in the fields of electronics, petroleum, and transportation [1,2,3]. However, metal equipment can easily be corroded in humid air, and the development of corrosion is reported to be related to the material species and the atmosphere [4,5].…”

“…In the literature, a variety of indirect and non-destructive testing techniques [6] are proposed to estimate the condition of a power component. Traditionally, the moisture content has been estimated by using the chemical analysis of oil.…”
