-The Interdisciplinary TelecommunicationsProgram at the University of Colorado has developed an internet based remote laboratory environment for master's level graduate students; our suite of telecommunications experiments substantially extends prior work focused on networking equipment, by (1) providing a systems focus, (2) enabling multiple reinforcing methods of accessing the educational material, (3) providing a configuration matrix to support realtime network reconfigurations (of real network elements) (4) undertaking a careful assessment of the learning environment. The goal was to create an environment that reproduced (not just emulated) the lab experience.We recently completed the final phase of this project focusing on assessment of this learning tool; such assessment is still rare in the literature on remote laboratories.We describe the project from three perspectives; students' exam results, students' lab reports, and students' satisfaction with the distance experience (based on interviews). We conclude that our remote laboratories provide similar learning outcomes to their in class analogues, but that there are important differences in student perceptions of the experience, including perceived difficulty and pace.

Abstract-This paper presents an original approach proposed and successfully used in University of Aveiro and targeted to advance e-learning tools and remote laboratories for state-ofthe-art engineering education. Nowadays, reconfigurable systems, in general, and FPGA (field-programmable gate array) based systems, in particular, constitute an essential part of engineering practice. The respective professional trends are, however, not reflected accordingly in contemporary engineering education curricula. The paper argues importance of reconfigurable systems in education and proposes effective learning methods and tools, which include laboratory templates, animated tutorials, education-oriented examples, a remotely reconfigurable prototyping system, and a virtual software/reconfigurable hardware co-simulation environment.

Abstract-A virtual laboratory is a virtual space where students are able to carry out practical activities. This paper presents an integrated structure for a virtual laboratory consisting on nine resources divided into pedagogical, human, and technological factors. Such a structure is based on the experience gained in design and development of virtual laboratories during the past 11 years in a virtual university. The proposed structure has been applied to different virtual laboratories, and this paper presents the special case of a virtual networking laboratory (VNLab) where students can access real networking devices. The VNLab structure described in this paper has been used at the Open University of Catalonia for the Cisco Networking Academic since 2001. Its suitability has been evaluated by the students using a Web questionnaire, and its correctness for the industrial electronics field has been analyzed.Index Terms-Cisco NETLAB+, networking laboratory activities, remote laboratory, virtual laboratory, virtual learning environment (VLE), virtual networking laboratory (VNLab).
