A Novel Approach on Microwave Hyperthermia

Abstract: Microwave hyperthermia (MH) requires the selective focusing of microwave energy on the targeted region while minimally affecting the healthy tissue. Emerging from the simple nature of the linear antenna arrays, this work demonstrates focusing maps as an application guide for MH focusing by adjusting the antenna phase values. The focusing of the heating potential (HP) on different density breast models is performed via the proposed method using Vivaldi antennas. The effect of the tumor conductivity on the focus… Show more

“…In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the CNN-based antenna excitation optimization, a comparison was performed with the results obtained from look-up tables. For the linear antenna system, 2 phase values (ϕ 2 , ϕ 3 ) are varied to focus the energy to the target [29]. The HP distributions are calculated for all possible integer phase values (in degrees), and 360*360=129600 HP distributions are obtained.…”

“…Consequently, 4 phase and 4 amplitude variables are defined. Please see [29] for a detailed explanation of the antenna configuration and excitation scheme. Among the 4 phase variables, one of them should be defined as a reference, ϕ 1 = 0, to obtain a unique phase set.…”

“…However, to obtain a “true-real time” image, real-time US can be co-registered to previously acquired imaging modalities that better visualize the target lesion. Tracking systems showed promising results and have been validated mostly for RFA, MWA [ 64 ], and cryotherapy, showing an increased accuracy in needle placing, fewer needle repositionings, primary efficacy [ 65 , 66 ], and lower radiation dose [ 67 , 68 ].…”

“…The symmetry offered by the provides good coverage of the breast tissue. Linearly distributed applicator designs have also been proposed [ 18 , 21 , 22 ]; however, their application has not been appealing because they have low coverage due to the non-symmetrical geometry.…”
