A novel application of time-reversed acoustics: Salt-dome flank imaging using walkaway VSP surveys

Abstract: In the past few years, there has been considerable research and interest in a topic known by various names, such as Time Reverse Acoustics (TRA), Time Reverse Mirrors (TRM), and Time Reverse Cavities (TRC), which exploits reciprocity and the time symmetric property of the wave equation. Very little of this work has been directed at the seismic exploration imaging problem. In fact, most of the work has had application in sonar, medical and non-destructive testing applications. Here we present some initial resul… Show more

“…The exact form of SI by crosscorrelation (CC) is derived by Wapenaar (2004) for any inhomogeneous lossless medium using reciprocity theorems. Willis et al (2006) show an example of imaging steep salt flanks by creating virtual sources from walk-away VSP data; Bakulin & Calvert (2006) apply SI to image through complex overburdens and develop its field application for sensitive reservoir monitoring. Other approaches to SI have also been proposed.…”

“…Willis et al (2006), Lu et al (2006), andHornby et al (2006) applied seismic interferometry to image VSP salt dome flanks. Minato et al (2007) and Kurang et al (2008) transform double-well VSP data into virtual cross-well data by cross-correlation.…”

“…The data obtained from the antenna receiver array, recording the scattered waves from several surface targets, illuminated by a single ETS antenna, presents a unique opportunity for testing the time reversal algorithm [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], in a homogeneous background medium, with known propagation speed. Shown in Fig.…”
