A novel antifouling ultrafiltration membranes prepared from percarboxylic acid functionalized SiO2 bound Fe3O4 nanoparticle (SCMNP‐COOOH)/polyethersulfone nanocomposite for BSA separation and dye removal

Abstract: BACKGROUND Silica coated magnetite nanoparticles (SCMNPs) were synthesized via a co‐precipitating method and functionalized with carboxylic acid and percarboxylic acid groups for the preparation of microporous polyethersulfone (PES) nanocomposite membranes and used in bovine serum albumin (BSA) and dye separation. There is no published report about the use of this nanoparticle in the preparation of mixed matrix membranes. RESULTS Different concentrations of these nanoparticles were used. The 0.5 wt% SCMNPs‐COO… Show more

“…Aliouche et al found that color removal caused by azo dyes followed an increasing order: UV < acetone/UV < S 2 O 8 2− /heat < S 2 O 8 2− /H 2 O 2 /UV < S 2 O 8 2− /UV < H 2 O 2 /UV [ 9 ]. Various nanomaterials used as the absorbents contain cobalt-zinc ferrite nanoadsorbents [ 19 ], silica nano-composite [ 16 , 20 , 21 , 22 ], nano zero-valent iron [ 23 ], Fe 3 O 4 nano-composite [ 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 ], carbon nanomaterials [ 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 ] and clay [ 34 , 35 ].…”

“…Comparing Fig. (a) and (b), whereas the typical Si‐O‐Si peak around 1072 cm −1 for silica was apparent, the latter exhibited peaks at 2850 cm −1 and 2915 cm −1 , indicating the symmetric and asymmetric stretching vibration of –CH 2 from the LDPE . This was proof for the success coating of LDPE onto silica nanoparticles, serving as evidence in addition to the TEM images (Fig.…”

“…SPEEK resulted in thermodynamic instability during phase inversion process by enhancing the viscosity and water‐soluble properties. Therefore, it provided a segmental gap between the polymer matrix in both PES/SPEEK membrane, PES/SPEEK/TiZr, and PES/SPEEK/TiZn MMMs 36 . Additionally, the increase in the loading of TiZr from 0.25 to 0.5 wt% enhanced the surface roughness.…”

This observation suggested that the nanoparticles were mainly distributed on the membrane surface.…”
