Comparative Analysis of Requirement Change Management Challenges Between in-House and Global Software Development: Findings of Literature and Industry Survey

Requirement changes are inevitable, and Requirement Change Management (RCM) is a complex process in software development. In-house software development and Global Software Development (GSD) are two widely used development approaches and there is a need to explore the RCM commonalities and differences in the two development approaches. The primary objective of this study is to identify the challenges that influence RCM in both approaches. First, we have implemented Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and identified 9 challenges that impact the general RCM process and 3 more challenges related to RCM with GSD. Second, we have conducted a questionnaire survey based on SLR results and collected feedback from 69 industry practitioners. The survey result indicates that there are four out of nine challenges, namely impact analysis, requirement traceability, requirement dependency, and system instability having the same impact in both in-house and GSD approaches. On the other hand, cost/time estimation, artifacts documents management, user involvement, requirement consistency, and requirement prioritization need more attention while implemented in GSD paradigm. Furthermore, regarding two important project management structures in GSD, centralized project structure and distributed project structure, the survey results reveal that all challenges have same impact except user involvement and change control board management, which are more important in centralized project structure. Lastly, the result from t-test indicates that both data sets retrieved from SLR and survey are close to each other. This study distinguishes RCM challenges in in-house and GSD approaches and in the context of two prominent project management structures followed in GSD projects. It would assist researchers by providing potential research directions and industry professionals to understand and implement RCM in different context more efficiently. Accurate Software Effort Estimation is of high importance with regard to Software Project Management. It can be specified as the process for predicting Effort regarding costs, needed for developing software products. A lot of techniques related to software effort estimation were carried out for developing models that are generating optimal estimation accuracy. Swarm intelligence is one such technique. The process-related in selecting the optimum estimation algorithm is expert dependent and complex. The presented study optimizes the estimation using the COCOMO II models by two models: the first model applied the dolphin algorithm, the second model applied suggested hybrid dolphin and bat algorithm (DolBat). By applying the two models on two data set and evaluate with the use of Magnitude of Relative Error(MRE) and Mean Magnitude of Relative Error(MMRE). The results indicate that the dolphin algorithm has better than previous algorithms but the (DolBat) is the best to get the coefficient value of the COCOMO II model. This paper estimates the effort for software by optimizing the COnstructive COst MOdel (COCOMO) model parameters using hybrid BATGSA (Bat inspired Gravitational Search Algorithm) algorithm. The performance of the COCOMO model completely depends upon its parameters which can be optimized by using meta-heuristic algorithms. This paper uses hybrid BATGSA algorithm which hybrids the improved bat algorithm with the gravitation search algorithm (GSA) to optimize the COCOMO model. The bat algorithm demonstrates the hunting and routing behavior of the bat which is improved by using a random walk in the exploration phase. The exploration phase is further improved by using GSA as gravitation force affects the velocity of the bat. The algorithm has been analyzed on four NASA datasets downloaded from promise repository. The comparison of the algorithm has been made with existing three states of art techniques i.e. COCOMO model, BAT algorithm, Improved BAT(IBAT) algorithm by using normalized error as a parameter. The reduction in error ranges from 2% to 10% on different dataset as compared other state of art algorithms proves the significance of proposed algorithm.
