A Novel Algorithm for Fault Type Fast Diagnosis in Overhead Transmission Lines Using Hidden Markov Models

Abstract: -Power transmission lines are one of the most important components of electric power system. Failures in the operation of power transmission lines can result in serious power system problems. Hence, fault diagnosis (transient or permanent) in power transmission lines is very important to ensure the reliable operation of the power system. A hidden Markov model (HMM), a powerful pattern recognizer, classifies events in a probabilistic manner based on fault signal waveform and characteristics. This paper presents… Show more

“…Hence, auto‐closure with fixed time setting was not required for transmission line. Jannati et al proposed a powerful pattern recognizer termed as hidden Markov model for classification of the faults based on waveform and characteristics in probabilistic manner . The probabilistic measurement provided an extension of power system in to a new era called HVDC transmission system to improve the reliability of the system.…”

“…Hence, the fault diagnosis evolved in research works to ensure the reliability of the system. 3 Based on the study of fault waveform and associated characteristics, the probabilistic classifier or powerful pattern recognizer such as hidden Markov model 4 introduced in the fault analysis. Hidden Markov model has the ability to solve the nonlinear high dimensional problems and classify the disturbances in power system.…”

“…The faults followed by the arc phenomena are permanent faults making significant changes in the TL characteristics. The faults which appear as a consequence of the arc and are cleared by temporary removing the faulted phase are transient faults . According to the experience, 70% to 90% of faults in the TLs are SLG faults, with a very high percentage being transient in nature .…”
