A novel adaptive spatial scissor-hinge structural mechanism for convertible roofs

Abstract: a b s t r a c tIn this paper, a new adaptive deployable spatial scissor-hinge structural mechanism (SSM) is introduced, which can be converted by means of actuators between a multitude of arch-like, dome-like and double curved shapes, where it can be stabilized and carry loads. This novel SSM is a spatial extension of a planar SSM introduced recently that can achieve a wide range of planar geometries. Main differences of the proposed structural mechanism from current deployable structures are the new connectio… Show more

“…There are many kinds of SLMs like parallel type (Xiang and Wei, 2007) and multiple group type (Hu, et al, 2006). It also has many variants (Juan and Mirats, 2008, Akgün, et al, 2011, Nango, 2010. For example, (Nango, 2010) proposed a unclassical SLM (arms are intersect instead of hinged) with gear train as a revolute input motion to achieve a tilting and lifting motion to help people standing up easily.…”

“…The studied stair is easily deployed for use and folded for storage with a four-bar linkage as actuator. Akgün, et al, (2011) introduced an adaptive deployable spatial mechanism with SLE. Structural response to different connecting locations of linear actuators is studied.…”

“…Among the examples of these structures, the most impressive ones are deployable bar structures with single degree-offreedom (DoF). These structures not only transform themselves from a compact configuration to a predetermined, expanded form, but also may become stable and carry loads (Pinero 1961;Escrig 1985;Gantes, 1989;Hoberman 1990;Kokawa & Hokkaido 1997;Atake 2000;Van Mele et al 2007;Akgün et al 2010Akgün et al , 2011Maden et al 2011). Therefore, such structures may offer viable solutions for architectural applications, especially for temporary buildings, emergency shelters, exhibition halls, outdoor recreation facilities or sporting fields (Fig.…”
