A Noticeable Change in Indoor Radon Levels After Platform Screen Doors Installation in Seoul Subway Station

Abstract: 서 론서울의 AbstractPlatform screen doors (PSD) installed at 289 stations in Seoul metropolitan subway from November 2005 to December 2009, are expected to prevent death from a fall and improve air quality. In this study, we systematically surveyed changes in radon concentrations before and after PSD installation in Seoul metropolitan subway stations. By solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD), the radon concentrations before and after the PSD installation were measured at 54 stations of 6 lines from 2 to 7 rep… Show more

“…When CO 2 concentration exceeds 1000 ppm, occupants may complain about headaches, nose and throat ailments, tiredness, lack of concentration, and fatigue [81,217,218]. Additionally, radon exposes respiratory tissues to alpha radiation and increases incidences of lung cancer, but concentrations of airborne radon in subways are usually below admissible dosages [219][220][221][222].…”

“…On the other hand, PSDs prevent air pollutants, especially PM10, from tunnels to platforms. PSDs have five research areas including IAQ, fire smoke, thermal environment, energy conservation, and airflow analysis [219,[277][278][279][280][281][282][283][284][285]. PSDs with controllable vents are wildly attentional environmental control systems.…”

“…e PSD (platform screen door) separates the main line from the platform to cut off harmful toxic gases and hightemperature smoke and heat in the event of a fire, provides a safe escape route in an emergency, and reduces unpleasant train-induced wind, dust, and noise coming from the tracks, thereby increasing the air-conditioning efficiency [3][4][5]. Due to these advantages, the PSD installation is specified as a platform safety facility in the construction of urban railways, and the PSD-related studies have been conducted by many researchers.…”
