“…As reviewed by Fretter and Graham (1964), the sexual state of a hermaphroditic species can be affected by both environmental and genetic factors. However, if environment is the single controlling factor, variations should be observed in the reproductive biology of isolated North American populations of C. fluminea, as has been reported for English populations of the freshwater unionid Anodonta cygenea (Bloomer, 1939). “…Species-specific variations in lifehistory strategies, as for example with the North American Unionoidea (Van der Schalie, 1970;Heard, 1975) which display a variety of sexual strategies adapting them to their particular microhabitats, should also be expected. Downing et al (1 989) have demonstrated that Elliptio complanata is a protandrous, sequential hermaphrodite but also showed, as first noted for unionids by Bloomer (1939), that sexual expression is not species-specific but may be highly variable among populations. Morton (19874, working on an assemblage of Hong Kong fresh and brackish water bivalves, showed differences in life-history traits and sexual strategies which were equated with the concept of r and K selection (MacArthur & Wilson, 1967;Pianka, 1970) as applied to occupation of temporally unstable vs. stable habitats.…”

“…aspects will be realized". For example, A. cygnea may be dioecious (gonochronistic) in running waters whereas hermaphroditic animals can exist in ponds (Wiesensee, 1916;Bloomer, 1939). This point is given added emphasis by the occurrence of a few hermaphrodites (0.3%) in the A. woodiana population (which otherwise comprised approximately 40% males and 60% females).…”
