A note on post maturity in purebred commercial rabbits in Egyptian conditions

Abstract: The present study was carried out on the pure Bauscat (Bau), pure New Zealand (NZW) and pure Californian (Cal) strains of rabbit. Overall reproductive performance for overdue does of the three breeds was determined and compared with that of does delivering at the normal time. Overdue does of the Bau and NZW breeds had a significantly (P < 0·05) higher annual mean number of pups weaned than overdue Cal does. There was a high incidence of pup mortality in post-mature litters, and the causes of this high morta… Show more

“…(1999) and those on E2 level at day 5 before delivery were similar to those of Kudari (1992) in sheep. Gestation length results were similar to those of Trimpleton (1939), Adams (1972), Jainudeen and Hafez (1987) and El‐Darawany (1994) in rabbits. The difference in gestation length in does could be because of the difference in endocrine control of parturition (Abdel‐Hafez 2000).…”

“…The gestation pattern in Nubian crossbred goats was similar to that observed in rabbits by Broeck and Lainpo (1975), Jainudeen and Hafez (1987), El‐Darawany (1994, 1998) and Farghaly (1996). The pre‐ and post‐term litters resulted in earlier and later delivery, respectively, compared with full‐term deliveries.…”

“…Premature pups are a live born litter of low birth weight. Also the weight or size of the foetuses has a large effect on the duration of pregnancy in rabbits (El-Darawany, 1994). The decrease in gestation length shows a significant correlation with large litter size in rabbits (Rodriguez et al, 1985).…”
