A note on measuring group performance over time with pseudo-panels

Abstract: equal to one. The aim of this paper is twofold. First, based upon considering a baseline group technology we define a new base-group base-period PPMI where the DC always vanished. Second, when more than two groups are analyzed we show that under this framework the new base-group base-period PPMI, the new base-group CDMI and the components of both indexes satisfy the circular relation. As a consequence, the complicated 'adjusted index' defined in Camanho and Dyson (2006) for measuring the technology gap to sati… Show more

“…The efficiency literature dealing with impact evaluation proposes different approaches to evaluate group performance. Since the seminal papers by Charnes et al (1981), Grosskopf and Valdmanis (1987), Månsson (1996), researchers have tried to disentangle program efficiency from the managerial one, in the attempt to distinguish a component attributable to the context or the program under which the DMU operates from a component related to its internal managerial characteristics (Aparicio et al, 2017;Aparicio and Santín, 2018;Camanho and Dyson, 2006;Johnson and Ruggiero, 2014). In the procedure we propose, we adapt the concept of the nonparametric metafrontier approach developed by Battese and Rao (2002), Battese et al (2004), and formalized by O'Donnell et al (2008).…”

“…The CDMI was recently extended by Aparicio et al (2017) and Aparicio and Santín (2018) for use in the context where panel or pseudo-panel data are available, and the target is to determine how the measured productivity gap initially measured by the CDMI changes over time. A panel implies that the same group of DMUs is observed across all analyzed periods.…”

“…Aparicio et al (2017) refer to this information structure as a pseudo-panel database. In this case, the approach introduced in Aparicio et al ( 2017) and Aparicio and Santín (2018) can be used to compare the change in the productivity gap of these representative groups of DMUs over time using a pseudo-panel Malmquist-type index (PPMI).…”

“…9 It is possible to replace the index decomposition part with a frontier-based approach where we can compare and aggregate the gasoline and diesel cohorts (see, e.g., Camanho & Dyson, 2006;Aparicio et al, 2017;Aparicio & Santin, 2018). This opens an interesting avenue for future research.…”
