A Noninvasive Test for MicroRNA Expression in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: MicroRNAs have recently been proposed as non-invasive biomarkers in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC). The aim of this study was to analyze the expression of a panel of miRNAs in epithelial cells collected by oral brushing from OSCCs from regenerative areas after OSCC surgical resection and from their respective normal distant mucosa. Oral brushing specimens were collected from 24 healthy donors, 14 OSCC patients with specimens from tumour and normal distant mucosa, and from 13 patients who had OSCC resectio… Show more

“…[19][20][21][47][48][49][50][51][52][53] In cell culture studies, overexpression of hsa-mir-21-5p is associated with increased proliferation, migration, invasion, and colony formation as well as an decreased rate of apoptosis by targeting clusterin or PTEN. Numerous studies demonstrated an overexpression of hsa-mir-21-5p in OSCC/HNSCC tissue, blood samples, oral cytology samples, and cell lines.…”

“…In particular, the miRNA miR-146a is higher in the serum of patients with OSCC than in healthy controls. 13 miR-146a also inhibits growth of human hepatocellular carcinoma cell and is involved in anti-tumour immune suppression. However, it is still unclear whether miR-146a affects tumor growth or metastasis in OSCC.…”
