A Noninterpenetrating Three‐Dimensional 4669 Iron(ii) Coordination Polymer Built with a Trigonal‐Antiprismatic Iron(iii) Metalloligand

Abstract: A second coordination sphere of six Nexo atoms in a trigonal‐antiprismatic arrangement allows the metalloligand [FeIII(L)2]+ (red spheres, L=hydrotris(1,2,4‐triazolyl)borate) to assemble with Rh2(OAc)4 linear spacers (blue rods) in an unprecedented noninterpenetrating 3D framework with 4669 topology. The metalloligand is reduced to the iron(II) state during the reaction by the borate ligand.

“…This complex, termed a metalloligand, can itself act as a ligand in a second step, coordinating to a different metal centre leading to the targetted mixed-metal coordination network structure. 2 A number of metalloligands have been previously utilised in this manner, including complexes of pyridinedicarboxylates, 3 Schiff bases 4 and bis(oxamato) ligands, 5 that function as ditopic O-donors, and pyridyl-functionalised porphyrins, 6 dipyrrinato ligands, 7 terpyridines 8 and tris(triazolyl)borates, 9 that function as polytopic N-donors.…”

“…Coordination polymers constitute one of the most important classes of organic‐inorganic hybrid materials, that have been subject of intensive research in recent years . Coordination polymer architectures exhibit potential applications as molecular wires, electrical conductors,, molecular magnets, in host–guest chemistry, and in catalysis . The adsorption of water by porous solids is important for many applications requiring capture and release of water .…”
