A non-invasive heart rate measurement system using laser Doppler blood flowmetry with husbandry training of the masked palm civet (Parguma larvata)

Abstract: Husbandry training (HT) is done to facilitate healthcare, treatment or animal research with zoo animals. At the Omuta City Zoo, HT of masked palm civets (Parguma larvata) is used to aid the taking of blood samples. With HT the burden on the animal can be remarkably reduced without the use of anesthesia. However, it is necessary to devise a blood sampling method using HT that reduces stress on the animals as much as possible. To devise such a stress-reducing method, quantitative assessments related to stress ar… Show more

“…5(b), the intervals of the remaining peaks at the higher cutoff frequency were 0.26 s, 0.26 s, 0.30 s, 0.36 s, and 0.38 s. The average interval is 0.312 s (=192 beats min −1 ). Since the previous study 26) showed that the blood flow PR is 188 beats min −1 , it can be said that the remaining peaks indicate blood flow PR.…”

“…In the previous study, the algorithm was used to measure blood flow PR on a masked palm civet (Parguma larvata) during HT. 26) We succeeded in the measurement and obtained a blood flow PR of around 188 beats min −1 . However, we obtained blood flow pulse waveforms for a few seconds.…”
