A next-to-leading order study of photon-pion and pion pair hadro-production in the light of the Higgs boson search at the LHC

Abstract: We discuss the production of γπ 0 and π 0 π 0 pairs with a large invariant mass at collider energies. We present a study based on a perturbative QCD calculation at full next-to-leading order accuracy, implemented in the computer programme DIPHOX. We give estimations for various observables, which concern the reducible background to the Higgs boson search in the channel H → γγ, in the mass range 80-140 GeV at the LHC. We critically discuss the reliability of these estimates due to our imperfect knowledge of fra… Show more

“…At low E T the uncertainty in the cross sections linked to scales variations amounts to up to ±20% but it saturates at around ±10% above E γ T ≈ 15 GeV at central and forward rapidities. As aforementioned, global PDF fits do not reliably determine the gluon for x 10 −2 at low, yet perturbative, Q 2 20 GeV 2 scales [42]. This is due partly to the lack of precise structure function data for x < 10 −4 and mainly due to the fact that the copious DIS F 2 results probe the quark distribution, while the gluon density is constrained by the evolution, log(Q 2 ) dependence, of these data.…”

“…often exemplified in the Higgs boson decay into two high-E T photons [2]). From a pQCD perspective, prompt photons issuing from hard parton-parton scatterings constitute a particularly clean testbed of perturbation theory in the collinear- [3,4] and k T - [5] factorization (or colour-dipole [6,7]) approaches as well as of various logarithmic resummation techniques [8].…”

“…The new p T thresholds are 80 GeV/c for the single-photon trigger and (30,20) GeV/c for the diphoton trigger (both relaxed and non-relaxed flavours). A few prescaled single-and double-photon triggers have also been introduced, for the purpose of studying trigger efficiencies.…”

“…Pile-up events from minimum bias interactions were added to the hard interaction, assuming a luminosity of L = 2 × 10 33 cm −2 s −1 . K-factors are applied to take into account the expected differences between the lowest order cross sections given by pythia and the NLO cross sections of the different background processes [26][27][28][29][30]. The K-factors used for each background are summarised in Table 2.3 and are estimated to have an uncertainty of 20-30%.…”
