Zymomonas mobilis is well known for its outstanding ability to produce ethanol with both high specific productivity and with high yield close to the theoretical maximum. The key enzyme in the ethanol production pathway is the pyruvate decarboxylase (PDC) which is converting pyruvate to acetaldehyde.
