Palabras clave: procesos avanzados de oxidación, sonoquímica, ultrasonido, Box-Behnken, optimización RESUMENEn la presente investigación se evaluó el tratamiento secuencial de coagulación quími-ca (CQ) seguida de los procesos avanzados de oxidación (PAO) Fenton (H2O2/Fe 2+ ) o foto-Fenton (UV/H2O2/Fe 2+ ) intensificados con radiación de ondas de ultrasonido (US) de baja frecuencia. La optimización del proceso de pretratamiento con CQ, mediante la prueba de jarras, mostró que una dosis óptima de coagulante (Al2[SO4]3) de 800 mg/L, remueve 99 % de la turbidez y 53 % de la demanda química de oxígeno (DQO). El clarificado resultante se empleó para la evaluación de los PAO. Mediante el análisis estadístico del diseño de experimentos de superficie de respuesta Box-Behnken se estableció que las condiciones óptimas de operación para el proceso US/H2O2/Fe 2+ fueron: 1 mM de Fe 2+ , 14 mM de H2O2 y pH 3. En estas condiciones de operación el proceso de CQ acoplado con el proceso US/H2O2/Fe 2+ removió alrededor de 82 % de la DQO en tanto que al acoplarlo con el proceso US/UV/H2O2/Fe 2+ alcanzó 95 % de eliminación en 90 min de reacción. El uso de ondas de ultrasonido incrementa la eficiencia del proceso alrededor de 10 %. Durante el proceso también se monitorearon la mineralización de los contaminantes y el consumo de H2O2.Key words: avanced oxidation process, sonochemistry, ultrasound, Box-Behnken, optimization

Agro-industrial wastewaters are characterized by the presence of multiple organic and inorganic contaminants of environmental concern. The high pollutant load, the large volumes produced, and the seasonal variability makes the treatment of these wastewaters an environmental challenge. A wide range of wastewater treatment processes are available, however the continuous search for cost-effective treatment methods is necessary to comply with the legal limits of release in sewer systems and/or in natural waters. This review presents a state-of-the-art of the application of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) to some worldwide generated agro-industrial wastewaters, such as olive mill, winery and pulp mill wastewaters. Studies carried out just with AOPs or combined with physico-chemical or biological treatments were included in this review. The main remarks and factors affecting the treatment efficiency such as chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total organic carbon (TOC), and total polyphenols removal are discussed. From all the studies, the combination of processes led to better treatment efficiencies, regardless the wastewater type or its physico-chemical characteristics.

The discharge of poorly decontaminated winery wastewater remains a serious environmental problem in many regions, and the industry is welcoming improved treatment methods. Here, an innovative decontamination approach integrating Fenton's process with biofiltration by Asian clams is proposed. The potential of this approach was assessed at the pilot scale using real effluent and by taking an actual industrial treatment system as a benchmark. Fenton peroxidation was observed to remove 84% of the effluent's chemical oxygen demand (COD), reducing it to 205 mg L. Subsequent biofiltration decreased the effluent's COD to approximately zero, well below the legal discharge limit of 150 mg L, in just 3 d. The reduction of the effluent's organic load through Fenton's process did not decrease its toxicity toward , but the effluent was much less harmful after biofiltration. The performance of the treatment proposed exceeded that of the integrated Fenton's process-sequencing batch reactor design implemented in the winery practice, where a residence time of around 10 d in the biological step typically results in 80 to 90% of COD removal. The method proposed is effective and compatible with typical winery budgets and potentially contributes to the management of a nuisance species.
