A new ultraluminous X-ray source in the galaxy NGC 5907

Abstract: We report on the serendipitous discovery of a new transient in NGC 5907, at a peak luminosity of 6.4×10 39 erg s −1 . The source was undetected in previous 2012 Chandra observations with a 3σ upper limit on the luminosity of 1.5 × 10 38 erg s −1 , implying a flux increase of a factor of > 35. We analyzed three recent 60ks/50ks Chandra and 50ks XMM-Newton observations, as well as all the available Swift/XRT observations performed between August 2017/March 2018. Until the first half of October 2017, Swift/XRT ob… Show more

“…We detect four sources brighter than the limiting magnitude in the 2-σ error circle of NGC 5907 ULX-2 in our F160W image (see right-hand panel in Figure 1 and Ta- Figure 1), but its position is inconsistent (at > 3-σ) with our localization of the ULX. This is due to our smaller localization uncertainty: our 1 − σ uncertainty is 0.3 versus 0.42 for Pintore et al (2018), as they used a different method to register the Chandra and HST images.…”

“…We excluded from our analysis the XMM-Newton observation 0795712601 as source contamination, mainly from NGC 5907 ULX-2 but also from other sources in NGC 5907, undermines a clear characterization of ULX1. 39 We simultaneously analysed all XMM-Newton spectra in the energy range 0.3-10 keV and we fitted them with an absorbed broken power law model (bknpow in XSPEC 40 ). The Tuebingen-Boulder ISM absorption model (tbabs) was adopted and the abundances were set to those of ref.…”

“…Of the many sources confirmed as ULXs, a number of those associated with star forming galaxies have been found to have pulsations, implying that the compact object is a neutron star (e.g., Bachetti et al 2014 to Pintore et al 2018). Although ULXs in star forming galaxies have been studied extensively, ULXs also exist in a completely different environment: globular clusters (GCs).…”
