A new two-dimensional model for electro-mechanical response of thick laminated piezoelectric actuator

Abstract: This paper investigates the electro-mechanical behaviour of a thick, laminated actuator with piezoelectric and isotropic lamina under externally applied electric loading using a new two-dimensional computational model. The elastic core is relatively thick and thus it is modelled by Timoshenko thick-beam theory. Although the piezoelectric lamina is a beamlike layer, it is formulated via a two-dimensional model because of not only the strong electro-mechanical coupling, but also of the presence of a two-dimensio… Show more

“…Piezoelectric ceramics have played an important role in actuator and sensor applications due to their excellent electromechanical coupling properties and extremely fast response and have been widely studied by many researchers (Huang et al, 2011;Lim et al, 2001;Lim and Lau, 2005;Sethi et al, 2008;Tzou and Chou, 2001;Uchino, 1998;Yang et al, 2004;Yang and Xiang, 2007). In addition, piezoelectric ceramics, as embedded transducers, have been successfully applied to structural health monitoring of concrete in Song et al (2006Song et al ( , 2007 and Li et al (2010).…”

“…Based on the Bernoulli-Euler beam model, the natural frequencies, maximum displacement, and resultant force of a symmetric multi-morph cantilever were investigated in [11]; the electromechanical analysis of an asymmetric piezoelectric/elastic laminate beam was presented in [12]; and the electromechanical analysis of a symmetric piezoelectric/elastic laminate beam was studied in [13]. Using the Timoshenko beam theory, the electro-mechanical response of a thick laminated piezoelectric actuator was investigated in [14]; and the static bending, free vibration, and dynamic response of monomorph, bimorph, and multimorph actuators made of functionally graded piezoelectric materials were analyzed [15]. In [16] and [17], the piezo-elasticity solutions for functionally graded piezoelectric beams under the plane stress condition are deduced.…”
