A New Triterpenoid Saponin from the Stem Bark of Pometia pinnata

Abstract: Phytochemical investigation of the stem bark of Pometia pinnata resulted in the isolation of a new triterpenoidal saponin. The structure of the new compound, pometin (1), was established as 3-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)β-D-glucopyranosyl]-oleanolic acid based on 1D and 2D-NMR analysis including COSY, 2D J-resolved, HMQC, HMBC correlations and chemical transformations.

“…Saponins from P. eximia, growing in Sri Lanka, showed a variety of molluscicidal, insecticidal, antifungal, larvicidal and antibacterial activities [11,16,17]. Previous phytochemical investigations led to the isolation of a new triterpenoid saponin from the stem bark of P. pinnata [18]. In this paper, we report the isolation from the leaves of P. pinnata and structure elucidation of a new triterpenoid saponin, 3 (1), and a known flavone glycoside, kaemferol 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside (2) [19].…”
