Inrush currents generated when an electrical transformer is energized can achieve great values and cause abnormal difficulties in the power grid. The sympathetic inrush current phenomenon is resulted in the power system when a transformer is energized with the existence of other transformer already energized. The main objective of this article is the attenuation of sympathetic inrush current in a three-phase transformer. The control technique is carried out by the consideration of the residual flux value when de-energizing the transformer as well as respecting the three-phase shifting. Moreover, an experimental setup to measure the inrush current will be presented. Furthermore, a technique for controlling the circuit breaker to energize a 2 kVA three-phase transformer which allows the sympathetic inrush current to be attenuated was also applied and tested in the experimental. The contribution of this paper is that this technique is applied in measurements with an in-depth estimation of the residual flux. The proposed technique made it possible to completely eliminate the sympathetic inrush current.

The main goal of this work is the mitigation of inrush current in a three-phase transformer. This inrush current appears when energizing a no-load or lightly loaded transformer. It can reach very high values and can cause failures in the electrical system. The control strategy is achieved by considering the value of the residual flux when the transformer is de-energized as well as by respecting the phase shifting between the three phases. To measure the inrush current, an experimental configuration with a data acquisition system using dSPACE 1104 card was developed and is presented in this paper. A technique to control the circuit breaker for energizing a 2 kVA three-phase transformer without the appearance of inrush current was also tested and applied in the experimental setup. The specific contribution of this work is that this technique is applied in the measurements with a thorough investigation of the residual flux. The proposed technique achieved complete elimination of the inrush current.

Summary This paper proposes a new model for the low‐frequency transient analysis of a transformer, with a modified equation for calculation of the flux‐current characteristic representing the saturation inductance of the transformer. The model is based on the V‐I (voltage‐current) no‐load curves and uses the no‐load reactive power losses. To validate the model, it was used to simulate the no‐load magnetizing current in steady‐state condition, as well as the transient inrush current at network frequency. Evaluation was done both by comparing the simulation results obtained with the proposed model and those available in the relevant literature, and by practical measurements. The experimental results presented in this paper were obtained via a laboratory setup and a data acquisition system based on the dSPACE board 1104. Moreover, a control switching to mitigate the transient inrush current in a transformer was developed and applied experimentally in the laboratory and also in the simulations. This control strategy was performed by taking into account the residual flux at the opening instant of the related circuit breaker. A comparative study was carried out showing the validity of the proposed model and the mitigation technique.
