A new strain of tomato severe leaf curl virus and a unique variant of tomato yellow leaf curl virus from Mexico

Abstract: The complete genome sequence of a distinct variant of tomato yellow leaf curl virus-Israel (TYLCV-IL) and the DNA-A sequence of a new strain of tomato severe leaf curl virus (ToSLCV) isolated in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, are described and analyzed. The TYLCV-IL[MX:SLP:11] variant differs from all TYLCV-IL isolates described so far by a unique 42-nt duplicated sequence comprising a part of the conserved stem-loop element of the virion-strand replication origin and adjacent regulatory sequences. TYLCV-IL[MX:SLP:1… Show more

“… Localization of mutations found in the Intergenic region (IR) of begomovirus quasispecies. (A) Schematic representation of the intergenic region of tomato yellow leaf curl-like viruses showing the location of the replication associated (Rep) and the transcription activator (TrAP) protein binding regions, TATA boxes and ERE-like motifs (Bañuelos-Hernández et al, 2012 ). The nonanucleotide sequence conserved in all geminiviruses and the cleavage site for the initiation of rolling-circle replication in the stem-loop are also shown.…”

“…From there, TYLCV quickly spread to the USA, where it was identified in Virginia, Tennessee and South Carolina in the mid1990s (Polston et al, 1995), then in Florida (Polston and Anderson, 1997), Georgia (Momol et al, 1999), Mississippi (Ingram and Henn, 2001) and in Central America (Mexico) (Ascencio-Ibáñez et al, 1999;Banuelos-Hernandez et al, 2012;Brown and Idris, 2006). Other independent introductions of TYLCV into the Caribbean likely occurred when TYLCV-IL moved from East-Asia between 2006 and 2011 (Figs.…”

“…The same could be explained in regard to the isolation of Sinaloa‐Mexico (access number FJ012358). As mentioned by Bañuelos‐Hernández et al (2012), there are different introductions of the virus in Mexico: the first one was detected in the Yucatan peninsula (Ascencio‐Ibáñez et al, 1999) and later in the state of Sinaloa (Brown & Idris, 2006; Gámez‐Jiménez et al, 2009). The Sinaloa isolate is associated with infections from California in the United States, which also come from a migration of TYLCV‐IL from Australia (Duffy & Holmes, 2007; Lefeuvre et al, 2010).…”
