A new spherical harmonics scheme for multi-dimensional radiation transport I. Static matter configurations

Abstract: Recent work by McClarren & Hauck [32] suggests that the filtered spherical harmonics method represents an efficient, robust, and accurate method for radiation transport, at least in the two-dimensional (2D) case. We extend their work to the three-dimensional (3D) case and find that all of the advantages of the filtering approach identified in 2D are present also in the 3D case. We reformulate the filter operation in a way that is independent of the timestep and of the spatial discretization. We also explore d… Show more

“…Adding energydependent 3D neutrino transport will increase the computational complexity by an order of magnitude. Novel, highly efficient and scalable approaches to 3D neutrino transport will be needed to address this problem (Sumiyoshi & Yamada 2012;Abdikamalov et al 2012;Zhang et al 2013;Radice et al 2012).…”

“…III. The reconstruction method used for most of the simulations is the essentially non-oscillatory method WENO (5 th order weighted-ENO) [13,14], while the other reconstruction methods employed are PPM (the piece-wise parabolic reconstruction method) [45], and MP5 (5 th order monotonicity preserving) [46].…”

“…One of the main motivations [9] considered in formulating a filtered P n method was to enforce positivity in a spherical harmonics expansion. We write the FP n method using the generalised notation of [10], where the P n expansion (3) with filtering becomes…”
