A new species of Unilatus (Platyhelminthes: Monogenoidea) from the gills of Leporacanthicus galaxias Isbrücker et Nijssen (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from Brazil

Abstract: Unilatus irae sp. nov. (Dactylogyridae) is described from the gills of the armored catfish, Leporacanthicus galaxias Isbrücker et Nijssen (Loricariidae: Ancistrinae), from Guamá river, Pará State, Brazil. The new species can be differentiated from its cogeneners by the combination of the following features: anterior anchor with well-developed superficial root, inconspicuous deep root, shaft bent at midpoint, forming angle of approximately 60º, evenly short curved point; posterior anchor with inconspicuous root… Show more

“…The measurements and morphology of sclerotized parts of the specimens collected in the present study are almost identical to the descriptions of U. unilatus by Mizelle and Kritsky (1967), Mendoza-Palmero et al (2012), and Zica et al (2012). At present, Unilatus consists of six valid species: U. unilatus; U. anoculus (Price, 1968); U. brittani Mizelle, Kritsky, and Crane, 1968; U. dissimilis Suriano, 1985; U. irae Branches and Domingues, 2014;and U. scaphirhynchae Su-riano, 1985. Unilatus unilatus is distinguished from U. brittani by the posterior anchor having a sclerotized cup and a shorter blade than its base (Fig.…”

“…Drawings were made with the aid of a drawing tube fitted on an Olympus BX51 light microscope. The method of measuring sclerotized structures is modelled on Mizelle and Klucka (1953), Kritsky et al (1986), and Branches and Domingues (2014) and shown in Fig. 1.…”

“…Currently, Brazil includes the majority of the research groups in South America; they are distributed mainly in the north, south-east and south of the country. In the State of Pará, two groups have contributed mainly to helminth taxonomy, one resident in the UFPA, focusing on monogeneans (Branches & Domingues, 2014; Santos et al ., 2015), and the other in the UFRA, working on some other taxa (Melo et al ., 2013a, b) including the poorly known Aspidogastrea (Giese et al ., 2014). In the south-east, some groups belonging to three different institutions have contributed to taxonomic knowledge, as follows.…”

“…The global fauna of monogeneans (Platyhelminthes) of the family Dactylogyridae Bychowsky, 1933 infecting catfishes is very diverse and includes 379 species belonging to 31 genera [ 7 - 12 ]. Almost one half of the genera (14) and about 75 species are distributed only in the Neotropical region.…”
