A new species of Trembleya (Melastomataceae: Microlicieae) with notes on leaf anatomy and generic circumscription

Abstract: A new species of Trembleya that was first recognized by Auguste François Marie Glaziou is described. Line drawings, photographs, descriptions of the leaf anatomical structure, SEM images, distribution maps, conservation status, and comments on the generic circumscription of Trembleya are provided. The new species appears to be endemic to the Chapada dos Veadeiros in Goiás, Brazil. It is characterized by its oblong-lanceolate leaf blades (1.4–4.5 × 0.3–0.9 cm) that are papyraceous, 3–5-nerved from the base and … Show more

“…Based on an expanded phylogenetic analyses using five molecular markers (atpF-atpH, trnS-trnG, nrITS, nrETS and waxy) and 12 morphological characters for 113 taxa in Lavoisiereae, Versiane et al (2021) transferred all species of Trembleya to the enlarged Microlicia s.l. In order to accommodate these species in Microlicia, Versiane et al (2021) 2021) also supported the recognition of Trembleya s.s. as a distinct clade, as previously suggested by Pacifico et al (2019). Although recognisable morphologically, the Trembleya s.s. clade was transferred to Microlicia by Versiane et al (2021) because the recognition of that clade as a distinct genus would make Microlicia s.l.…”

“…Fritsch et al (2004) confirmed the placement of Trembleya in Lavoisiereae using molecular data. Subsequently, new species were described in Trembleya by Fidanza et al (2013), Pacifico and Fidanza (2015) and Pacifico et al (2019). Additionally, one species was transferred from Lavoisiera DC.…”

“…Knowledge about species richness and composition of an environment represents the most important attributes when studying a biological system (Ricklefs & Schluter, 1993). It is known that there are numerous studies aimed at describing the composition and focused on the taxonomy of many groups of organisms (Frota, Ota, Deprá, Ganassin, & Graça, 2020;Pacifico, Almeda, Carmo, & Fidanza, 2019). However, protists especially planktonics, are under-explored groups today (Lansac-Tôha, Bonecker, Velho & Lima, 2004).…”
